Monument- Red Vineyard at Arles Blank Space (New York) showed work by Kyu Hak Lee at Context Miami 2018.
These pieces, obviously, are something of a homage to Van Gogh. They are not paintings, however, they are mixed media on board. Lee uses polystyrene foam, wrapped in newspaper and then covered with hanji, a traditional Korean paper.
There is a stated notion that this construction is a comment on consumerism and "upcycling." Whether that is part of the real intent or holds any water on close examination is neither here nor there; these are masterful recreations and UNIQUE as recreations.
