When asked what he had that was "new" he immediately pointed to this piece by Ran Ortner. I cleverly neglected to get the name of the painting. You need to go see this which is why it is posted without all the details.
Hu says the piece, which is not small, IS small for Ortner who usually does three panels as large as this one piece. Another interesting thing about this view of the sea is that, as a surger, Ortner is not looking from shore, nor from a boat but from the midst of the waves. This is his view from the sea. The photo is a poor representation.
Lest you think this is some surf-bum Hu says Ortner has studied pigments like an Old Master. He makes his own--and this doesn't mean he buys pigment in the store and mixes it with oil. He makes his own pigments from nature.
Hu says that the first time he saw an exhibit of Ortner's work he stayed two hours to look--and there were only three pieces being shown.
