Bronx-born Rivers was a filmmaker, musician, artist and even an actor. He was also a progenitor of pop art who studied at the Hans Hofmann School You can find out more about his work at the Larry Rivers Foundation.
Thiebaud, born in Arizona and raised in California, has something in common with your kids; he was influenced by comics and cartoons. Before his career as an animator for Disney he worked as a sign painter and after serving in World War II he was a commercial artist. He studied at California State University (Sacramento) where he received a BFA and MFA. He spent much of his career as an influential teacher. He is in his mid 90s now and, although retired from teaching, continues to work.
This is something we say often; there is something special about an artist whose work you can recognize from across a room. Thiebaud is one of these. His work has a great deal of variation throughout his long career but you can still look at a piece and know, with metaphysical certainty, it is his.
