No Habitar Ya La Tierra
Mary-Anne Martin Fine Art had some astounding pieces at Art Basel Miami Beach (as I type they are still there with one day left). Alfredo Castaneda's No Habitar Ya La Tierra is perhaps less initially striking than Matta's Aftermath Of World War II, 1945 but upon close examination (in person not of this photo) you will see a surprising complexity in this seemingly simple work.
Many times when a piece uses a large field of a similar color people walk right past without seeing the subtle strokes and forms in that field. Do not be one of those people!
Gunther Gerzso's painting, Untitled (Azul Horizontal), is a work of strikingly beautiful color. Again, it must be stressed that this photo (or any photo) will not do this work justice. It is like looking at a photo of an emerald. It is a wonderful small piece.
Some may recall I made a "no dead painters" pledge this year. I have already broken it. Now I have broken it three times in one post. One of the great things about Art Basel Miami Beach for those lacking a massive trust fund is just getting to see works like these.
