The band’s track Bright Eyes is linked above. Atlanta-based Vonnegutt have been lurking around just below most music fan’s radar fow awhile. They play on Big Boi’s Follow Us and also have been on the big festival circuit. The Appetizer EP comes out on Purple Ribbon/Favoriate Gentleman. If the labels ring a bell it is because the former is Big Boi’s and the latter the imprint of Manchester Orchestra.

Vincent Minor just released a new video for, The Trap, off his upcoming eponymous album. He is heading out on the road for a tour in the fall. His band is going to be of pick up musicians in all the cities he is hitting. Worked for the uber-talented Chris Harford and the Band of Changes so why not? Minor will also be bringing something else with him—as part of his LA Lords company each show will also have gay speed dating. It sounds like a party to me. Minor’s upcoming record has some heavy weight production and musician credits. Go check out his website for more information—www.vincentminor.com Local ParkSeeland have a new record, How to Live, due for release October 26 on Loaf Recordings. The first single, Local Park, is above. This is the second record from Seeland. You can also get the whole album as a stream (in exchange for your email) at the band's MYSPACE Page.
Local Park is a song about how Brits of all persuasions head for the local park when the weather isn't crappy. The press release says it is a British tradition. It is likewise a tradition in Chicago. When the weather gets above -10 for the first time everyone runs around with their shirts off; "It is SO WARM." Anyway, check out the track. This record is supposedly a more organic effort than their previous one. I take that to mean less electronics and more instruments! Minus the Bear, who I interviewed for Gearwire.com awhile back, are heading out on tour in Europe with Jimmy Eat World to support their new record (mentioned here before I believe), Omni. No worries USA, they start out touring here beginning in October in Eugene Oregon. The tour will also include a stop at the Voodoo Music Festival. After this comes the Jimmy Eat World tour. For dates and more information head to www.minusthebear.com photo by Casey Orr Danbert Nobacon, writer, agitator, musician has a new album and a boo coming out in October. The album (with The Bad Things), Woebegone, comes out October 19 while the book, Three Dead Princes-An Anarchist Fairytale, comes out October 1.
The title of the album scared me for a second. I thought maybe Nobacon had thrown in his lot with Garrison Kiellor. That is akin to throwing in your lot with Satan. But he didn’t. Isn’t it sad that a perfectly good word like “woebegone” has been tainted. Anyway, those who remember Chumbawumba, may recall Nobacon was part of that illustrious anarchic group. The book is illustrated by Alex Cox who directed one of my fave movies, Repo Man. Ok It was a fave when I was a teenager. I might hate it now but I doubt it. “John Wayne was a fag.” A tour of readings and music is in the offing as well. ANYWAY. You can hear some tracks on Nobacon’s Myspage Page. The New Regime’s Second record, as yet nameless, will soon be released. When? Don’t know. It isn’t that it is secret or anything. I think it is probably because they don’t have a name. How about “Robert”, a nice traditional name. Ok, maybe not a good name for an album. And I shouldn’t say “they” because The New Regime is a solo project from Ilan Rubin the current drummer for NIN and former stick-handler fot Lostprophets. Part of this record was, in fact, recorded while touring with NIN.
While you cool your heels waiting for the record to appear, with its name, you can download a new song, Remission of Guilt free (in exchange for your email address) at www.thenewregime.com. A video for the song is also in the offing. Saidah Baba Talibah announced the USA release of her video for her song, Place Called Grace, last week. Yes. I am slow and lazy and should have had this posted last week. The video is set in a speakeasy and..blah..blah blah. It is linked below. Watch it. The song, I THINK, comes off an ep called The Phone Demos. Basically they didn’t have a tape recorder to get any scratch tracks down so they recorded them to a cell phone. The result shocked both Talibah and her guitarist Donna Grantis because they sounded “good.” Not necessarily technically-our-engineer-thought-it-was-good good but it had an undefinable quality to it that they liked. Which is what music really should be, or at least some portion of music should be. For more information on Saidah Baba Talibah go to herblogspot site. Marky Ramone is performing a full concert of Ramones music, with an all-star band, as a benefit for Musicians Institute on Friday, October 8 at MI Concert Hall, 1655 N. McCadden Place Hollywood. The band will be announced in a couple of weeks.
The benefit is specifically for the new Marky Ramone Drum Scholarship for Musicians Institute. I had occasion to interview Marky awhile back and he was a genuinely nice guy and this is more proof of that. All the money from the benefit goes to the scholarship. Tickets in advance are $30 for festival seating, $45 for VIP seating (first three rows) and $99 for VIP backstage (first three rowns and backstage pass with after show meet & greet as well as a Marky Ramone gift bag. We are not going to guess at what will be in that.). For more info on TICKETS CLICK HERE. If you decide to walk up the tickets go up to $35 for festival seats and $50 for VIP seats. Backstage not available walk up. Marky Ramone is in the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame and spent 15 years drumming for The Ramones. He is the only living member of the longest running line-up of the Ramones. He played over 1700 shows and was on more than 15 albums with the band. For more info on MarkyRamone or the concert click www.myspace.com/markyramone Sometime Earlier, probably in the spring (I could check, but I am lazy) we wrote about a series of EPs coming out from Pretty Lights.
Whether we did so or not, the second of these EPs, Spilling Over Every Side, has now been downloaded 50,000 times in two weeks. But the real news is that Pretty Lights will be out on tour in the USA this fall, mostly in October and December. Before that will be a series of Festival dates. For more information go to the Pretty Lights Website. You can download Spilling Over Every Side at the site for FREE. Only Here For The FightJenny Wilson is already a success in Sweden from whence she comes. But now she has come, figuratively if not literally, to America via her new release, Hardships!
The album comes out on August 24. I have a copy. It is good. I am not doing a review, I promised myself I was not going to do reviews but since they sent me a copy I have to mention it right? RIGHT? One thing I do like about the album is the subtle use of unusual instrumentation. I am not sure UNUSUAL is right but perhaps unusually placed. The record is self produced which shows Wilson as a well rounded musical talent. The press release compares her to Bjork. I would not do so. You can hear a track from her, Only Here For The Fight, above. For more information log on to jennywilson.net |
