Third Man Records are releasing records by a couple of theoretically fictional bands (this language is used with intent). These bands, which were apparently real, are from the Detroit area. First there is a single from Rockfire Funk Express, a band that recorded a single in 1973 at United Sound Systems. The two tracks were: People Save the World and Rockfire Funk Express. Both songs have sat in a vault somewhere for 40 years. The band morped into -- until Death. The rest is history…the history of punk according to the release…except no punks ever heard the songs. Nonetheless? Interesting ! But it HERE. The other release-- Tangmania—also rumored to have never really existed is by The Underwear Heads. Apparently the band included John Crenshaw (brother of Marshall Crenshaw). Also, according to the release, the six song EP was pressed for release on vinyl but all the copies were defective. This is the first actual release. Buy it HERE. I have no idea as to the veracity of the origins of these releases. It could all be bullshit for all I know. Nonetheless both come out May 28, 2013. Buy a bundle of both releases HERE.
Boards of Canada have a new video for their song, Reach for the Dead, out now. You can check it out below. The song is off the group’s new LP, Tomorrow’s Harvest, which comes out June 11, 2013.
The video…or film..is by Neil Krug.
Be sure to look for more from Boards of Canada soon. Interesting group.
The CBGB Music & Film Festival is a five day festival and conference taking place from October 9 to 13, 2013. It takes place at a variety of venues in Brooklyn and Manhattan. The conference and film festivals will take place at The Landmark Sunshine Theater on East Houston Street. The festival will showcase music, film, art social awareness and the workshops will be entertainment industry oriented. 40 or so new movies will be premiered etc. There are four different levels of tickets. You can find out more HERE. I have no idea what this has to do with CBGBs.
Susanna, of Susanna and the Magical Orchestra, has a new track, Death Hanging, out now on her own label, SusanSonata. The song features vocals by Siri Nilsen and Susanne Sundfør. Unsurprisingly the Norwegian artists recorded the track at the Øya Festival in Oslo in 2012. In 2012, Susanna released the LP, Wild Dog, and plans to release a new LP, The Forester (as Susanna and Ensemble neoN) in September, 2013. She is also shortly to head out on tour. Dates are below. Tour May 24 - Oslo, NO @ Rockefeller w/ Bonnie 'Prince' Billy May 29 - Stockholm, SE @ Södra Teatern w/ Bonnie 'Prince' Billy May 31 - Malmö, SE @ KB w/ Bonnie 'Prince' Billy June 1 - Copenhagen, DE @ Den Grá Hal w/ Bonnie 'Prince' Billy June 2 - Aarhus, DE @ Voxhall w/ Bonnie 'Prince' Billy June 11 - Kino, NO @ Kongsberg [Stemmerettsjubiléet 2013] July 6 - Kino, NO @ Energimølla, Kongsberg Jazzfestival
Japanther, the musical-art project of Ian Vanek and Mat Reilly, have released a dozen LPs in the past ten years. Their latest release, Eat Like Lisa Act Like Bart, came out yesterday on Recess Records. They have a video for the track, Stolen Flowers, and are heading out on tour in support.
I have never seen them but I have been told that their shows, even in small venues, are something to be seen. Often bands who are heavy on the art produce music that you don’t actually want to LISTEN to—that is NOT Japanther. Give a listen, give a look.

Independent Project Records is back. The innovative label is re-emerging with a three CD re-mastered package from Red Temple Spirits on June 11, 2013. The release includes three releases from the band. IPR was founded in 1980 and was started as a class project at UCLA’s Fine Arts Department. It was way for founder, Bruce Licher, to release his own music in artistic packaging but it became more than that. Bands such as Savage Republic, Licher’s own Scenic and many others called the label home. The reborn label will be reissuing out of print titles but they will also be releasing new material. Artistic music in innovative packaging will surely follow. The Red Temple Spirits release will be limited to 1000 numbered copies and feature the LPs: Dancing To Restore An Eclipsed Moon , If Tomorrow I Were Leaving For Lhasa and I Wouldn’t Stay a Minute More...
