"Accidentally Preserved" Rare Silent Films To Be Released On DVD

5/31/2013

Picture
Silent film enthusiasts (like me) should be very pleased over the release of Accidentally Preserved: Rare & Lost Silent Films from Vintage 16mm Prints, a somewhat cumbersome title for this DVD collection of nine silent film shorts. The set comes out June 11 and will be available only at Amazon.com via their “CreateSpace” DVD on demand service.

Some of these have been lost for decades and guess why they are back? Crowdfunding.  The crowdfunding project was put together by silent film musical accompanist, Ben Model.  Model coined the phrase “accidentally preserved” to refer films that exist because they were copied onto 16mm safety film for home rental (yes, they had home rental). Model is, as mentioned, a silent film accompanist and has worked as such at the Museum of Modern Art since 1984.

The films include pieces by Wallace Lupino, Billy Franey, Clyde Cook, Cliff Bowes and Paul Parrott (Charley Chase’s sibling). There is also a Max Fleischer cartoon and an industrial film (very few of these from the era survived—even less than entertainment films)

Find out more at www.accidentallypreserved.com. There will be more releases in the series. Probably in part, because of this “on demand” service by Amazon. It is tough to get distribution of such films and costly to duplicate in numbers.

For more on Model head to www.silentfilmmusic.com.

Paranormal Activity 3, Pretty Funny Marketing Website....Stay With It.

When a film (Paranormal Activity 3) takes the time to come up with creative ways to market their offering, ages before it comes out it can mean one of two things; a) they are really gung-ho and creative and just had too many ideas (and "get" the multi-media world we live in) or b) they are substituting marketing for making a good movie.

In this case I am inclined to believe the former over the latter.

Check HERE for what I am talking about.

I think it is clever. When it was sent to me, I watched the first video and, even considering it was forwarded by someone I KNEW was working on the movie, it took me a little bit for it to register. I suggest forwarding the link around to your horror fan friends and see who gets it!

The Bloody Indulgent, A Vampire Musical From Kenneth Hughes

Filmmaker Kenneth Hughes has several projects “in the can” (that is film person talk for “done). One of them is the vampire musical, The Bloody Indulgent. I have not seen it. But I keep thinking I really should. I have no information on when it will be in a festival or theater near you but should I find such information I shall endeavor to pass it on.

Picture
Kenneth Hughes is an actor, director, producer and dancer. He is also a desert topping and a floor wax (I am trying to communicate using only old Saturday Night Live quotes) He has worked with; Eric Stolz, Michael Bay, Christopher Columbus, the Coen brothers, Matthew Ralston, Tracy Ullman, Martin Landau and ISO Dance. His films have been featured at Canne, Sundance and he has been a teacher at CalArts.

For more info on Hughes head to www.kennethhughes.com.

FilmFather, Film Reviews For Dads (And More)

10/15/2010

FilmFather, is another of our favorite film websites. It has been around since July, 2008.

“FilmFather features reviews of movies – new and old, mainstream and obscure – that dads and their kids can enjoy together, as well as ‘guy’ movies dads can enjoy when they have time to themselves.” Says Eric Zerbe , who created the blog.

Reviews cover and answer questions dads might have when considering a movie. Some of these are the same as anyone would ask—and any review would include but it adds these to the mix as well.

• Can I watch it with my kids? (you really do not want to be sitting there with Jr. watching Caligula)
• Will my kids even want to watch it? (“Dad, can we go? Dad, can we GO?”)
• Will my “FilmMother” like it? (Does the name “John Bobbitt” mean anything to you?”)

Oxford Film Freak, Brainchild of Melanie Addington, For Film Nuts In Mississippi And Beyond

The website below has no logo so we used a related one.

Oxford Film Freak began in 2008. And the chief freak is Melanie Addington.

“It started just as a fun way for me to keep up with movies I had seen but continues to grow as a Mississippi film resource.” says Addington.

Readers of the site come from all over but the focus is movies and films from Mississippi. Addington also has a dream for the site. She wants to cover every film ever shot in the great state of Mississippi.

“I have a long standing concept of writing about every movie ever filmed in Mississippi and have them all listed - now just to get to random trivia about each film!” she says.

Oxfordfilmfreak.com has writing for Addington, guest bloggers, news, film festival information and more. Addington is also a co-director at the well-regarded Oxford Film Festival.

“ It really is just a hodge podge of ideas thrown into one blog. “ she says.

Hmm, that sounds kind of familiar.

The blog ties to Addington’s weekly print  column that runs in the arts and entertainment magazine, Oxford Town.

In an ongoing attempt to let folks know about interesting sites that deal with movies I give you--www.needcoffee.com. They run reviews, articles, interviews and “random chaos.” The site appeared in 1998 and they are located in Atlanta.

The aim of the site (unlike this one) is to KEEP YOU AWAKE.

The only thing I would say about Need Coffee is we want to be the One Stop Shop for people who have already consumed enough caffeine to kill a small camel but still can't stay awake.” says John “Widgett” Robinson, proprietor of the site.

Cinema Crazed Covers Cult & Independent Films

Felix Vasquez Jr. runs Cinema Crazed. Their raison d’ etre is covering the best and worst in independent and cult cinema. Sometimes “best” and “worst” overlap in cult cinema so we think Vasquez may be trying to confuse and confound us.

Another great thing about Cinema Crazed is that they cover undiscovered filmmakers making waves on the underground. Places like this site are where you want to go when you want to see what is next in film.

Check out Cinema Crazed HERE.

Movie Habit Covers Boulder Movie Scene And Do Theatrical & DVD Reviews

9/20/2010

Picture
Movie Habit has movie and DVD reviews (as the headline indicates) but they also cover festivals, do interviews, have reviews of Colorado based theaters and calendar information for the Denver/Boulder area.

Movie Habit has six writers, all covering different stuff.

 * Andrea Birgers writes animation, Disney DVDs, and literary adaptations

* John Adams writes about animation, art, and history

* Matt Anderson writes about mainstream movies and is our second-longest-running contributor

* Marty Mapes covers revivals, art films, and other dark corners of the film world

* Robert Denerstein, formerly film critic for the Rocky Mountain News for 27 years; he writes about new movies

* Brad Weismann writes about movie theaters in Colorado

Mapes says the ultimate purpose of the site is to provide value. How you say? Well, Movie Habit can save you $10 on a crappy movie. Pretty valuable.

“It warns you of false promises and guides you to hidden treasure. Life is too short for bad movies. For those who read reveiws after seeing a film, criticism helps you digest what you saw. It reveals undercurrents and metaphors that renew your appreciation of a great film. It helps you put your finger on exactly why bad films fall short. Movie Habit is written by those who have a serious movie habit, for those who would like to develop good movie habits.” wrote Mapes.
