Van Doren Waxter (New York) showed work by Richard Diebenkorn at Art Basel Miami Beach 2018.
Diebenkorn was an Oregon-born artist who grew up in the San Francisco. He attended Standford University. While in the Marine Corps during World War II Diebenkorn was exposed to a variety of Modern artists , mostly while stationed in Virginia. He had the opportunity to visit museums whose collections inspire artists today--The Phillips Collection (Washington D.C.), MOMA (New York) and Gallatin Collection (Philadelphia). He produced work during his time in the service.
After the war, on the G.I. Bill, Diebenkorn attended the California School of Fine Arts, in fairly short order he would become a faculty member there. He spent time in New Mexico before returning to Northern California. It isn't overstating it to say both through his art and his instruction he would dramatically influence art on the West Coast, and indeed, in the entire country.
If you are interested in art you should know more about him and you can find out more at the Richard Diebenkorn Foundation website. Van Doren Waxter is the gallery that represents the foundation.
