Tàpies, born in Barcelona, grew up during the Spanish Civil War. Like a number of artists of his era he was influenced first by Impressionist painters and later became enamored of the art of children. The Surrealists were another influence. But his career as a painter was not totally tied to any specific artistic movement. His work is in the collections of the Tate Gallery, Museum of Modern Art (New York) and the PompidouC enter (among others).
The Perez Art Museum Miami will have a retrospective of Tàpies work, Tàpies: From Within, opening February 6, 2015.
