Terra was established in 1978. They sponsor reseaarch, exhibitions and academic programs around the world. The organization was started by Daniel Terra. A fun fact about Terra is that he helped discover a new "ink vehicle" that allowed printing presses to work faster. He was founder of Lawter Chemicals, a company specializing in printing ink/chemicals. His Terra Museum of American Art "merged" with the Museum of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2004. The foundation still owns the paintings which are on loan to the Art Institute.
