One of the descriptions of Staprans' work has this quote;" When I start painting. I don't know what I'm doing...I don't plan anything in advance." This might surprise you because there is nothing haphazard about the work. Brushstrokes are not wild and the palette is so consistent. The pieces seem so controlled. Mr. Staprans must have quite an orderly mind.
The artist hails from Latvia, emigrating to the USA in 1947. In addition to being an artist, is a playwright (he lives in the San Francisco area). At 92 years old he is still working (the piece above, An Italian Sunset Mug, is from 2018).

There has rarely been such a long-standing relationship between subject and artist. It implies a fascinating dedication and connection, especially given the influence of the work. The work below, Isla Negra Series II, is bronze and oil based enamel.
