Cy Twombly had several pieces at the wonderful pieces shown by Galerie Karsten Greve (Cologne, Paris, St Moritz) at Expo Chicago. One of the best things about Twombly is how some of his work enrages people. I have heard the time honored "MY KIDS COULD DO THAT" line whispered or shouted at his work (I have also heard it applied to artists as divergent as Jackson Pollock and Romero Britto). It is never accurate but it always amuses me.
Twombly often painted on paper and referred to mythology in his work. Sometimes the works are like calligraphy; sometimes they DO have a child like quality. Twombly was also a sculptor of note. For those who are critical of his work have company. In his early years in the 50s and 60s there were some scathing reviews of his work. That, of course, happens to everyone who is ahead of their time.
Untitled 1973 is composed of drawing paper, scotch tape, wax and crayon on paper.
