Everything Is Art (Moscow) Showed Work By Dasha Delone And Dima Goryachkin At Aqua Miami Beach 2015.

Delone's piece, Pretty Nudes, is oil on canvas. She works in sculpture, painting and also drawing

The small pieces below are aluminum silver gelating prints and were quite stunning. I  posted an image I took with a phone of some others a gentleman from the gallery brought out that hadn't been hung via instragram (@paogle). They were quite reasonably priced at around $400.

Ernest G. Welch School of Art and Design, Georgia State University (Atlanta) always have a group of unique and eclectic artists at Aqua (we write about them a year ago HERE).

This year they kindly gave me a sheet that had the artists on it and I could have easily identified each for you. Of course, I misplaced it. SO now you can go to the website and play the "guess which artist is which game." I highly recommend it and, if you live in the Atlanta keep an eye on openings and shows.

Revision Space (Pittsburgh...soon to be Houston) showed work by Travis K. Schwab and Miss Dingo at Aqua Miami Beach 2015.

Schwab, originally from Wichita, now lives and works in Pittsburgh. His pieces seem almost photographic in some elements but, obviously not so in others. Here is an artist who could paint photorealistically if he wished but who choses to show us a different world. Check out more at www.traviskschwab.com.

Miss Dingo's work is tied up in the complicated relations between humans and animals. We range from caretaker to butcher in this relationship. She creates using oil paint and woodblock printing. As you will note she sometimes paints on unusual objects. As far as we know she does NOT eat babies. Find out more HERE.

Revision is currently in Pittsburgh but ins in the process of moving to Houston. Texas is gaining a fine gallery.

C. Emerson Fine Art (St. Petersburg) Showed Work By Beau Stanton And Mauricio Vergara At Aqua Miami Beach 2015

C. Emerson Fine Art (St. Petersburg) showed work by Beau Stanton and Mauricio Vergara at Aqua Miami Beach 2015.

Stanton, a painter and a muralist, created these, images of the human head that look almost like traditional stained glass (they were back-lit). They are enamel on leaded stained glass back-lit in an  LED light frame. Find out more about the artist HERE. Some of Stanton's images (not these) call to mind drawings of "futuristic" flying machines from the 1890s, the kind of thing they used to use in old Monty Pythom animation.

Vergara is an Argentine-born artist now living in Spain whose small pieces depict pastorals scenes of people--except the people are not there. Their clothing, their animals and their habitat all remain clear but they are left to our imagination.  They beg us to ask ourselves a variety of questions; think of yourself from years ago. Where is that person? Are you the same?

Vertical Gallery (Chicago) Showed Work By Ben Frost At Aqua Miami Beach 2015

Vertical Gallery (Chicago) showed work by Ben Frost at Aqua Miami Beach 2015.

Earlier in the day I had a conversation that went something like this (ok it was a monologue) "I AM SICK OF POP ART, I HATE POP ART...IF IT IS POP ART-LIKE AND AFTER 1973 I THINK IT SHOULD BE BURNED."

This is a paraphrase. It likely went on a bit longer than that but if you knew how many mutilated portraits of Marilyn Monroe I'd just seen you might, perhaps, sympathize. Then I wandered into the Vertical Gallery room at Aqua Miami Beach.

Frost's work made me say "ok, I take it back." These pieces have an utilitarian angle as shopping bags and re-imaginings of popular advertising. I only took a few photos but the Krispy Creme piece below? I hate donuts and it made me want to head to Krispy Creme. They should hire him to do their boxes.

Good pop art, these days and in my humble opinion, has a sense of humor. It isn't just Warhol vomited up for the 50th time. Frost has a different vision from most doing pop art these days. See more at benfrostisdead.com.

Sara Nightingale Gallery (Water Mill) showed pieces on paper by Yuliya Lanina at Aqua Miami Beach 2015.

Her work comes from fairy tales but these are fairy tales of her own creation.  The work starts as collage but very little remains in the end as Lanina covers the collage with acrylic paint.
