Nihal Kececi was born in Turkey and started painting young. Her studio is in Bethesda, Maryland. Her background, curiously is in physics and nuclear engineering. But for the past decade or so she has dedicated herself to art. She works in acrylic, oil and pastels and her works tend to be large. And she often uses the palette knife to apply paint. The piece to the left is Vancouver and the piece below is Before The Rain. Find out and see more at www.nihalart.com. Elana Bulatova's work was shown at Red Dot 2012 by Intrepid Art out of Vero Beach, Florida. Her work was also at the Verge Art Fair 2012, Miami Beach. Bulatova works in acrylic and mixed media. She is a graduate of both Yale and the Moscow State University. You can find out more about the artist at her website, www.elenabulatova.com. Reymond Romero's work was shown by Art Tepuy (Caracas) at Scope Miami 2012. Romero, also from Venezuela, has had his work shown extensively in Latin America and in the United States. The rectangular works on the wall are titled, Compact Installation, and are made up of textile and mixed media. The bottom figures are entitled Technicolor...something. My image of the last word of the name is blurry. They are also textile and mixed media. Francesco Sena resides in Torino, Italy and has been the subject of numerous solo and group shows dating back to 1999. These exhibits have largely been in Europe so it was nice to get a chance to see his work in Miami. Black Way is shown twice to try to give an idea of the texture--as well as to show it with less glare. One of These Days seems to be more typical of Sena's work but it is hard to say what is typical since it varies quite a bit. Find out more at www.francescosena.com. Carpola Perla is an artist and a writer whose latest works were on display at Atelier 1022 Company, Miami. Spelling Bee and Off The Page are paper and light installations. Both incorporate Perla's writing. The latter piece has words excerpted from Perla's novel Gibbin House. Even without explanation the two pieces are beautiful. They stand up aesthetically alone. Fortunately the artist/author was on hand and talks about her work below. When you wander the streets of Wynwood (and adjacent areas) during "Art Week" in Miami you almost always find something interesting--solo exhibits at small galleries or in shops or other spaces. Perla was one of the jewels found accidentally this year. Find out more at www.carolaperla.com. Steven Guermeur is from Compiègne, France and lives in Vienna. His work was shown at Scope 2012 by Ogms out of Sofia, Bulgaria. It is all very international. Guermeur's work was also a "breeder" selections at Scope Miami--basically pieces by new artists on the rise. Framed Paper works are the gist of what is shown here. The artist has also had numerous solo and group shows in Europe and North America. Find out more about him at www.guermeur.com. Waterhouse & Dodd (London and New York) are one of the galleries that always have something interesting. At Scope Miami 2012 they had pieces by Jemimah Patterson. Patterson was also the subject of a recent exhibit at Boltax Gallery in New York. These pieces are unique and, looking back at images from the earlier exhibit they are also different. You might recognize them as from the same artist and you might not. Both seem old and new at the same time. Obviously these photos do not do justice with the reflections. But you get the idea. Hugh Hayden's "American Hero #2" Shown By Brass Tacks Culture Via VH1's "You Oughta Know"12/14/2012 Brass Tacks Culture had a number of interesting pieces but this one was something everyone walking through Scope Miami 2012 will recall. Hugh Hayden was one of the artists displayed via VH1's You Oughta Know. Scope curated a number of pieces that were displayed throughout the pavilion and in the outdoor VH1 Lounge that were felt to be "boundary pushing." Chihung Yang's "Sand & Flowers" And "Symmetry" Shown By J.P. Art Center, Taiwan At Art Asia12/14/2012 Chihung Yang , from Taiwan, but living in the United States for decades, had several pieces shown by J.P Art Center, Taiwan. His work is part of public and private collections worldwide. If you are a reader of art magazines you will have seen his work discussed on numerous occasions. These pieces (please excuse the reflection) are mixed media on paper. You can find more work, with better images at the artist website. These pieces have an incongruousness that appeals to me. Forms that you don’t think of together are placed in the same piece and fit perfectly. There is also the aesthetic beauty of the work. It is hard to tell in these photos. http://chihungyang.com/about.html |
