Gustavo Diaz Sosa Shown By Alba Cabrera At Just Mad Mia 2012 (Miami)

12/20/2012

Picture
Gustavo Díaz Sosa, from Cuba (the same town as Cuban master, Wilfredo Lam), produces unique and fascinating work.  His art was shown by Just Mad Mia in Miami shown by Galeria Alba Cabrera, Valencia. He also attended the famous San Alejandro Academy.

He eventually relocated to Madrid. His exhibition, De Condensa y Condenados, in 2010 showed new works—both paintings and sculptures.

The work at Just Mad Mia has a strange resemblance to some architectural drawings. Or something like that except…not like that. You can see examples here and also on the artist website, www.gustavodiazsosa.com.

Picture
Alejandro Campins, from Cuba, had his work shown by Raymaluz Gallery, Madrid at Just Mad Mia. Colorful, seemingly simple pieces that draw the eye and are more intricate than they seem on the surface. The photos, of course, do not do them justice.

They are fun pieces.

Find out more about the artist at www.alejandrocampins.com and more about the Gallery at www.raymaluzartgallery.com.

Manuel Antonio Dominguez Shown By Galería Ángeles Baños At Just Mad Mia In Miami

Picture
Galería Ángeles Baños showed the work of Manuel Antonio Dominguez at Just Mad Mia.  No idea as to the names of the pieces.  I won’t swear to it but all these seem to be on either paper or cardboard. The paper piece is the larger (that is clearly paper).

If there was a downside to Just Mad Mia it was the “labeling” in many of the booths. Not a lot of titles or info on the media at Just Mad Mia. I suppose the good side of this is that you can just enjoy the art without worrying about the details.

In this case you can find out more about the wonderful work of Manuel Antonio Dominguez HERE and about  Galería Ángeles Baños HERE.

Rene Holm’s work was shown at Just Mad Mia by Hans Alf Gallery, Denmark. Holm, also Danish, creates work that varies between haunting and pastoral. His pieces almost seem like woodcuts with their texture.  His work was just part of a group show at Hans Alf Gallery, It Happened In The Woods.

Holm was educated at the Aarhus Art Academy  and his work has been exhibited extensively. Find out more at www.reneholm.dk.

Camille Iemmolo At Art Miami/Context 2012 Shown By Packer Schopf, Chicago

12/18/2012

Picture
Camille Iemmolo's work calls to mind the daydreams of children. It may be that a previous chat with the artist influenced this observation but I doubt it. The piece to the right is Watch Your Mouth--On Sugar Mountain. This mixed media piece is made of paper, paint, feathers string and actual sugar.

Below are two additional mixed media pieces--Sex, Money, The Size and Price of Things--The American Way and Oh To Roam The Hills. The former is the lower photo and the latter the upper. Amongst the things used in these pieces are paper, wire, darts, a vintage tape measure, string tape, paint etc.

Every year at Art Week there are two or three (maybe four) new artists you find and this year, one of these artists was Iemmolo. She spoke about her work, Band-Aid House at Play, earlier. That installation and these pieces capture something like a vague memory of all of our pasts, our innocence but add to that a dose of realism that is like a slap (see the titles!).

All her work shown is whimsical and there is more to it than is on the surface. The care in the materials used--and that they match the intent of the piece-- shows an artist making the world fit their work, bringing the world into their work. The materials are part of the symbolism and integral to the point of these pieces.

These pieces were shown by Packer Schopf Gallery, Chicago.

Iemmolo is based in the Chicago area. You can see more of her work and find out more stuff at her website, www.camilleiemmolo.com.

Haitian Art At Keni Valenti In Wynwood During Art Basel 2012

12/18/2012

Picture
Haitian flags are fantastic, intricate beautiful works and they were what was on display at Keni Valenti in Wynwood during Art Basel week. Drapo vodou flags depict the spirit world, using sequins and designs. They are inspired by myths, legends, Catholic saints, African spirits and more.

The flags are sort of the antithesis of what the stereotype of "Voodoo" has always been. They are not dark and they are not scary.  They are bright and full of life.

Unconnected to this exhibit but a good place to find out more about these flags is the Haiti Art Cooperative. This group buys art from artisans at "fair trade" prices and use the money to fund programs helping the disadvantaged in Haiti.

David Wojnarowicz' Science Totem Shown By P.P.O.W. Gallery At Seven

12/18/2012

Picture
The late David Wojnarowicz' piece Science Totem was at Seven via P.P.O.W. Gallery. Wojnarowicz was a man of many talents--a photographer, writer, painter, performance artist and more.

This piece is acrylic on found wood.

Wojnarowicz was from New Jersey and briefly went to the High School of Performing Arts (can you say "Fame"?).
He dropped out and lived on the street as a prostitute. He later apparently became a farmer. Wojnarowicz was also one of the many artists to run afoul of the Catholic Church (although the furor was almost a decade after he died).

P.P.O.W. Gallery held a retrospective of the artist's work entitled Spirituality in 2011.
