There is something about the uneveness of this painting that makes it unnerving or maybe it is just all the recent devastating flood around the world.

Anat Ebgi (Los Angeles) Showed Work By Alec Egan At Expo Chicago 2017--Art For Book Lovers9/15/2017 Anat Ebgi (Los Angeles) showed work by Alec Egan at Expo Chicago 2017. His work is art for book lovers. These books have no titles on them; you can imagine them as novels, diaries, or sketchebooks piled upon each other. Some of the pieces show the books in a larger setting but they are still what matters in the image. Egan is based in Los Angeles and he uses imagery in a repetitive ways. The wallpaper, books and green wall hanging all appear in the pieces and he uses similar tactics in his other work. Roberto Paradise (San Juan) Showed Work By Robert Nava And Omar Velazquez At Expo Chicago 20179/15/2017 Roberto Paradize (San Juan) showed work by Robert Nava and Omar Velazquez at Expo Chicago 2017. The alligator piece is, no doubt, one of the more eye catching paintings at this fair. Nava is from East Chicago, Indiana. He has a BFA from Indiana University Northwest (Gary) and an MFA from Yale. Velasquez received his BFA in printmaking from Universidad de Puerto Rico. His work is often collage and mixed media. There is a quality that almost makes you think of stop-action animation in the pieces below. McCormick Gallery (Chicago) and Vallario Fine Art (New York) showed work by Suzy Frehlinghuysen and Amanda WIlliams at Expo Chicago 2017. This is an interesting contrast in artists--different notions of art and both likely considered unorthodox in their time (the latter time being...now as the piece is from 2017). Frehlinghuysen was a painter with cubist tendencies and opera singer. Williams is an artist trained as an architect. The piece below is Be the Girl with the Turned On Hair and it is part of her solo exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago). Moskowitz Bayse (Los Angeles) showed work by Eleanor Swordy at Expo Chicago 2017. Swordy was born in Paris and now lives in Vermont. She holds a BFA from Cooper's Union. There are subtle hints of influences from a diverse range of artists in these pieces, maybe even a little bit of Boterismo. You can find out more about the artist at www.eleanorswordy.com. SIM Galeria (Curitiba/Sao Paulo) showed work by Rodrigo Andrade at Expo Chicago 2017. Andrade was born and still lives in Sao Paulo. These pieces are oil on fiberboard (or in the case of Bush Path-American Night, on woodframe. All of the work is textured to a greater or lesser extent. Nocturnal-Ruined Stone Bridge
Paul Zoubok Gallery (New York) showed work by Vanessa German at Expo Chicago 2017. German is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Pittsburgh. She is also more than an artist as the founder of Love Front Porch and the ARThouse. The former refers to German's own front porch, where she creates art in her Homewood Neighborhood--kids are welcome (I strongly recommend clicking the link above). Art House is the logical extension of Love Front Porch, an actual Art House (read more on it HERE). When German is called "multi-disciplinary" it is not blowing smoke. She is a poet, painter, performer, writer and, of course given the piece above, a sculptor. The piece above, i love you this much, resembles many of her other sculptures in theme and structure. Her work is held in numerous private and public collections including Driskell Center for the Study of the Visual Arts and Culture of African Americans and the African Diaspora and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Cernuda Arte (Coral Gables) showed work by Vicente Hernández and Miguel Florido at Expo Chicago 2017. Cernuda feature Cuban artists--from Cuban masters to contemporary artists like Florido and Hernandez. Hernandez' work has a magical quality to it while Florido's looks like you could reach into the pieces and pick up a slice of watermelon or a flower. Richard Norton Gallery (Chicago) showed work by Eugene Dana, Margo Hoff and Gertrude Abercrombie at Expo Chicago 2017. Their booth is always a treat and always include artists from the region, the city even. A few years ago they showed work by artist/educator, Dana from his early years. These pieces are from the artist's later work in the 1980s. Work by Abercrombie is often featured by the gallery but this piece is quite large for the artist. The legendary Chicago artist (both for her art and her personality) usually painted works that are tiny in size. This "large" piece is a whopping 16 by 19 3/4 inches (unframed). Yes. that is a large work for her! Hoff, based in New York City, who referred to herself as an "autobiographical" painter. Her work always referenced her own experiences. She was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma as part of a large family. Her formal art education included classes at the University of Oklahoma (Tulsa), Hull House, The National Academy of Art and the School of the Art Institue. Find out more and read about the artist in her own words at www.margohoff.com. Pavane and Chiselled By Eugene Dana
Marc Straus (New York) showed work by Sandro Chia at Expo Chicago 2017. Chia is an Italian painter who came to prominence in the 1980s as part of the group known as Transavanguardia. His work has been shown all over the world for over 40 years--perhaps most notably as part of the Biennale of Paris, San Paolo and three different Venice Biennale. That is a pretty impressive list. The artist, orginally from Florence, reaches into history and art history and weaves a variety of influences throughout his work. His work is held by more prominent public and private collections than is practical to list. Find out more at www.sandrochia.com. |
