These look so much like gummy guns you are almost tempted to bite them. This would be unfortunate since they are made of tinted resin and glass.

Davidson Contemporary (New York) Showed The Delicious Work Of Darren Lago At Pulse Miami 20132/14/2014 Davidson Contemporary (New York) showed these pieces by Darren Lago at Pulse Miami 2013. They were tough to photograph--because so many people were trying to photograph the constantly. I had to grab some school girl by the hair and pull her out of the way to get this shot. JUST kidding! (I kicked her in the shin). These look so much like gummy guns you are almost tempted to bite them. This would be unfortunate since they are made of tinted resin and glass. Peter Sorel, Film Photographer, Has Two Upcoming Chicago Exhibits, February 20 And March 1, 20142/13/2014 Peter Sorel, film photographer, has worked on hundreds of movies. Some of the prominent movies he's been a part of include Twilight, Life of Pi, Easy Rider and Frida. He creates stills and movie post images in his work--as well as some newer, more abstract work based on Lake Michigan. He has two upcoming shows of his work. One opens February 20, 2014 at Hilton Asmus Contemporary and the other March 1, 2014 at Union League Club. Sorel moved to Chicago from Los Angeles six years ago. He has worked on movie sets for over 40 years. Some of his images were never used for promotional purposes and are, thus, a look behind the scenes. Not all his work, however, is movie-related. Since moving to Chicago he has begun to focus on personal images (including abstracts of Lake Michigan). Edward Burtynsky's Water runs from March 7 to April 6, 2014 at Sundaram Tagore (Singapore). There will be an opening cocktail reception from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 7. Burtynsky's most recent series, Water, is made up of color photographs. The artist is best known for his images of industrial landscapes. These images document the impact of manufacturing and consumption on the world's water supply. Aptly Burtynsky traveled the globe shooting images from 7,000 feet above to show the human footprint not obvious from a closer vantage. His images show Kumbh Mela where thirty million people gather to bathe, Icelandic desertification and gigantic irrigation sites in Texas (among many others). This exhibition will also host the Singapore debut of the documentary film Watermark which follows Burtynsky shooting images from the Water series. For more information go to www.sundaramtagore.com. Art Basel is set to publish a new book in conjunction with JRP|Ringier in celebration of the 44th year of Art Basel (which was 2013). The book documents the 2013 shows in Basel, Miami Beach and Hong Kong and will contain essays, interviews, personal highlights from participants. As you might expect there will also be images. Featured are artists and authors such as John M Armleder, Nicholas Baume, Harry Bellet, Dara Birnbaum, Maurizio Cattelan, Chris Dercon, Florence Derieux, Harald Falckenberg, Herzog & de Meuron, Gianni Jetzer, David Juda, Tadashi Kawamata, Hicham Khalidi, Arto Lindsay, Christine Macel, Massimo Minini, Elaine Ng, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Adam Szymczyk, Franklin Sirmans, Mickalene Thomas, Adrian Wong, David Zwirner and many others. The book will be available at Art Base shows, at European bookstores in April and in the USA/Asia in May. The cost (in US$ is $80). More information HERE. Marco Casentini's solo show, Up And Down, runs March 1 to April 26, 2014 at Brian Gross Fine Art (248 Utah St., San Francisco). There will be a reception for the artist from 4-6 p.m. Saturday, March 1, 2014. The exhibit will feature the Italian artist's geometric abstracts. He uses overlapping shapes and contrasting colors. This exhibit will also feature tridimensional wood pieces and plexiglas hemispheres. Thes are being show for the first time in the USA. His works are inspired by urban landscapes. Danzinger Gallery (New York) showed this piece, Durga's Mount, Juna Mahal, Dungarpur, by Karen Knorr at Pulse Miami 2013. The piece is an archival pigment print and measures 48x60 inches (usually I don't list scale but here I felt it was a good idea). Knorr was born in Germany and raised in Puerto Rico. She has lived in the UK for over 30 years. Her photographs, from the 1980s, have been an examinatIon to power and cultural heritage. Of course this is simplifying. Find out more about here HERE. Knorr wasn't the only artist shown by Danzinger. Unfortunatley she was the only one I have a half way decent image for. The other I tried to take a photo of was Thierry Cohen. Find out more HERE. Yes, taking photos OF photos is a little silly. But I am not afraid of being silly. Purdy Hicks Gallery (London) showed work by Jonathan Delafield Cook and Jorma Puranen at Pulse Miami 2013. Cook's drawings are so detailed you initially might think them photographs. The piece here is charcoal and conte crayon on primed linen. He was trained, in Japan, as an architectural draftsman, which goes a long way in explaining his eye for detail. After this training he studied at the Royal College of Art. There is more too this piece than duplication of reality. The white field behind adds something surreal to the mix. This isn't a sheep in a barnyard. Puranen's photos are works after my own heart. He takes photos of portraits, in fragments, avoiding dramatic use of light. For him the use of light is NOT to recreate the portrait exactly but to bring attention to the photographic process involved. This Goya piece stands out with the intentional bluring of the upper piece. Some might cry "That is just a bad photo." But if that is the intent it is actually a good photo. It is an interesting art concept, taking photos of other people's art and altering them so subtly. Mushrooms Moss And A Movie art by Jim Toia, Blanche Nettles Powers and Peter O'Kennedy runs February 20 to March 22nd at Kim Foster Gallery (529 West 20th Street,New York). There will be a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, February 20. The exhibit consists of drawings by Toia, paintings by Powers and videos by O'Kennedy. All of the artists' work references nature and also share similarities in their their methods. As you may be clued into from the exhibits titles mushrooms and Spanish moss feature prominently in the first two artists pieces (respectively). Von Lintel Gallery Showed Work By Joseph Stashkevetch And Antonio Murado At Pulse Miami 20132/11/2014 Von Lintel Gallery is poised to open their news space in Los Angeles. They showed work by Joseph Stashkevetch and Antonio Murado at Pulse Miami 2013. Stashkevetch' s piece is conte crayon on rag paper. A conte crayon is made of pigments, clay and graphite, The conte crayon is not as soft as pastels and can be used on a variety of surfaces. Murado's piece is oil on linen. He is a Spanish artist whose work almost looks photographic. He does more than landscapes. You can see more at the gallery website linked above. Black & White Gallery (Brooklyn) showed work by Christofer Kochs at Pulse Miami 2013. Kochs' work was presented as a solo exhibition at Pulse. You can find out more about Kochs (if you read German) HERE. The gallery was founded in 2002 and is an indoor/outdoor space in the Williamsburg area of Brooklyn. The gallery's mission is to work with promising artists and help move them forward in their careers. Hope to see more from Black & White soon. |
