The song Dominique was a hit and it made a very unlikely star out of a nun known as Soeur Sourire in her native Belgium (Sister Smile). The song was catch and unrelentingly cheerful. It sold 1.5 million copies.

But there was a tragic side to the story as well. Director Roger Deutsch, directs this documentary that the PR refers to as “speculative but persuasive”.  Despite the fact that sounds uncomfortably close to “largely made up” I will refrain from judgment until I see it. But then what will I know even then?

Sister Smile left the convent right after recording became popular and never took her vows. She ran a home for wayward girls and had a long, tumultuous affair with another ex-nun as her life unraveled.

Earlier this year we wrote about the NYC Food Film Festival. Four years into that fest (and over 20,000 attendies) they are expanding outward. The first annual Chicago Film Festival will take place September 24-25 at the MCA Warehouse. The festival will feature documentaries, shorts, features and, of course, food. How many other festivals let you taste what you watch?

The festival will feature films including Mark Irving’s Eat Your Fill, Orrin Zucker’s The Death & Life of Ice Cream, Craig Noble’s The Perfect Oyster and many more. One of the second night features is The Best of Hamburger America, a film by the festival’s director George Motz, for instance. Motz and Harry Hawk came up with the idea for the fest after the success of Hamburger America (book and film).

There are (or perhaps at this point WERE) a limited number of special VIP passes and pre-sale tickets to most events. They went on sale Aug 19 so I apologize if they are gone!

Visit www.chicagofoodfilmfestival.com to order and for information.

Remember the film Style Wars from the mid 80s? It was a documentation of the hugely influential NYC street culture of the time—Hip Hop, Grafitti art and more. This was a seminal time and I remember, even as a young, snot nosed punk rocker, that I really got something out of this film. As hard as it is to believe the negatives for this film, including the bits that wound up (figuratively) on the cutting room floor, are decaying and in need of restoration.

Style Wars won the Grand Prize for Documentaries at the then very new Sundance Film Festival. So how can you help? On September 9 there will be a fundraiser at BAM in NYC. Three screenings of the film will be combined with a reception (food provided by Farinella Bakery). Graffiti artists, ,b-boys and other guests will also be on hand. DJ Kay Slay will be spinning

Screenings are at 4:40, 6:50 & 9:15 p.m. with a question and answer session at 6:50 (when the reception begins).

Tickets are available at the BAM website.

If you cannot be there but still want to help with the restoration head to the Style Wars Restoration Fund Website.

The Angry Filmmaker (aka Kelley Baker) is offering a free download of the first four chapters of his book, The Angry Filmmaker Survival Guide. We are not sure but we suspect there will be a chapter on how to strangle a guy with another guy’s intestines in this book. Baker is, after all, the ANGRY filmmaker.

The download is for a limited time at www.angryfilmmaker.com. Just click on “Click Here” above the book cover. If you like what you read a PDF of the entire book will set you back a whopping $10. This is a limited time offer.

The angry filmmaker is also fundraising for his latest film, Kay Boyle. He is half way to his $6000 goal and if you have some spare cash you can help him get all the way there. Head to www.angryfilmmaker.com/dangerous-kay-boyle/

Finally Baker is at work booking his fall tour. He heads around the country talking about film, filmmaking and all sorts of other film related stuff. You can find more info on the website and even book him to speak at your schook, media art center, film festival or wrestling match.
