David Yow, best known as the front man for The Jesus Lizard, is also an artist.

Next month his first collection of work goes on display at DIY Gallery in Los Angeles (in Echo Park). The exhibit, entitled "SOLO:> the first ever one-man exhibition of paintings, collage and digital drawings by David Yow runs from August 14 throught September 11.

A reception with music and drinks will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. at 1549 West Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. There will also be a closing night event but that has yet to be announced.

Yow uses a variety of media in his work: acrylic, pencil, charcoal, collage as well as digital imagery.

A few weeks back we posted a piece on a fundraiser for Queens of the Stone Age/Eagles of Death Metal bassist, Brian O’Connor who was recently diagnosed with cancer. Yow designed the poster for that event and signed copies will be available with all proceeds going to O’Connor’s medical fund.

Curated by Andrea Jablonski and Anna Cerniglia, The Art of Touring exhibit features work by musicians inspired by life on the road. I bet there are a lot of pictures of those big, bendy aluminum pans full of  undigestible food and dirty pay laundries. AHH who am I kidding! No one does laundry on tour!

Actually, that isn’t what this is about at all (that would be the art show I curated, the one no one would come to due to the smell). This one is a collection of video, photos,. Sketches, written word and more. The photos I had a chance to look at are beautiful. Imagine finding beauty as you drive around in a van that, day after day, gets gnarlier and gnarlier?  Tough to imagine but that is what this is all about.

The opening reception is  July 16.  2010, 7-11pm at Johalla Projects
1561 N Milwaukee Ave  in Chicago .

The show itself runs through August 7 and you can drop by to see it Wednesday through Saturday 12-5. More info on the Johalla Projects Website.
