Lots of cool Christmas music out there from a wide variety of artists. Why does my car radio Christmas station keep playing the same old tired versions? Gee Whiz. You can check out, George Bailey, at Carolyn Sills Website HERE.
Carolyn Sills has a holiday single, George Bailey, just out. Check out the video below. Now, you may recognize the name—everyone has seen the movie—from It's A Wonderful Life. Christmas Time Is Here Leyla Akdogan and Sean Hoffman, of Loch & Key, released their first CD, Jupiter’s Guide For Submariners, in September. The two hail from L.A. and don’t suck at all. I say that because…well….L.A.? Music….?
Anyway the two will be playing the 51st Los Angeles County Holiday Celebration at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion between 3 and 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve Pacific Standard Time. The show will be on TV (KCET Channel 28), on radio at LPFK 90.7 and streaming at KCET.org. The two had a long holiday interview which was interesting. I choose to include one part of it—their recipe for mulled wine. “When choosing a wine for mulling, pick something full-bodied, as heavier reds will better withstand heating and spicing. Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah or Shiraz, and Zinfandel. Port and other types of fortified wine may also be used; however, when using these wines the amount of sugar added should be greatly reduced or even eliminated altogether.” Mulled Wine Recipe Ingredients: 1 bottle (750mL) red wine 1/2 cup water 1/2 cup of raw sugar, maple syrup or honey 2 sticks cinnamon 4 whole cloves 1/2 teaspoon grated nutmeg Zest of 1 orange Directions: -In a large pot, bring the water and spices to a slow boil for five minutes. -Remove from heat, add wine, and then warm on low heat for 30 minutes. -Make sure not to let the wine boil, as this will burn off the alcohol and destroy the flavours. -After the wine is done heating, strain through fine cheesecloth and serve. Makes 4 servings. Even though they say they just buy the packets at Trader Joes...Lazy bastards... Nicole Atkins has confirmed a winter tour to support her new record, Mondo Amore. There are some originals and a couple of Darlene Love classics. Have a listen above. EquestrianU.S. Royalty have been making the rounds to high profile events and getting high profile press. From SXSW to NXNE, from CMJ to Art Basel, the band has been making a name. The press release compares them to The Black Keys or Band of Horses but you can listen to Equestrian above and make your own decision.
The new record is the result of work with engineer Gus Oberg who also worked with The Strokes, Bloc Party and others. Prettiest Little Present Jenny O released her ep, Home, on Manimal, November 30th and a holiday single, Get Down For The Holidays via everyone’s favorite retailer (Target…no..seriously except for all the right wing anti-gay stuff, I love Target).
Now you can hear her second Christmas single, Prettiest Little Present, all over the internet and above. O is a Californian folk singer with a touch of jazz and a dash of hippy-era pop. She will have a residency in February at the Bootleg Theater in Los Angeles. I have made no secret of my love for The Black Angels and if you are anywhere NEAR Austin, TX at the end of April be sure to head to this year's Psych Fest at The East Side Drive In, in the middle of Austin (4/29-5/1). This festival is about the past, present and future of psychedelic music. There will be multiple stages and a slew of bands.
Already confirmed are: The Black Angels, Spectrum, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Dead Meadow, Atlas Sound, Prefuse 73, Crystal Stilts, Sleepy Sun, Black Ryder, Tobacco, The Growlers, White Hills, Fresh and Onlys, Pontiak, The Night Beats, The Cult of Dom Keller and Vacant Lots. More bands and info on discounted early tickets will come out January 13. There will also be a new festival website at that time. In the meantime check out past festivals at www.austinpsychfest.com. Neon Hitch, will be doing just that is giving away a surprise gift for every fan who likes her Facebook page (under the “Merry Hitchmas tab”). This starts today….and goes on for the rest of the month.
Two remixes of her track, Am I Dreaming (with Liam Horne) are on the Facebook page. Easy Does It remixed the first and ROBOPOP the second. Neon Hitch also has a new website at www.neonhitch.net. It began this week. Keep eyes and ears open for a new record coming out, Beg, Borrow, Steal, coming out next year on Warner Brothers. AmazingYou have to love One EskimO. Ok. You don't HAVE to but you should. I interviewed them for Gearwire.com when they played in Chicago opening for Tori Amos. They were nice guys. I hope someone edited those videos.
The band has been playing shows all over the USA since that time, including stops at Coachella and the Mile High Fest. Add to that TV appearances and the fact their track, Kandi, has been named the number 1 AAA song of the year by Billboard and it has been a pretty good year for these solitary, ice-bound aboriginals. Check out the band's track, Amazing, above. The band is also offering you a chance ot win an iPad by submitting your most “amazing photo” from 2010. The most inspirational wins an iPad (with five runners up winning a signed One EskimO disc). Click HERE to enter. Sur La PlancheIt used to be that when the words “French” and “Pop Music”…or just “music” were used together I instinctively reached to cover my ears. These days there are some French bands that totally don’t make me want to stab my eardrums with an ice-pick. La Femme are a sort of surfy, lo-fi operation out of paris who have an ep, Le Podium #1 La Femme, coming out on December 13 on Third Side Records. You can listen to their track, Sur La Planche, above and see their video for Telegraphe below. The band is on tour in the USA and are playing in San Francisco December 10 at Living Arts Fund and on December 12 at The Knockout. There will also be dates on the East Coast. |
